Tips For Finding Pet-Friendly Apartments

Posted on: 8 October 2020

When you have a pet, they are like a member of your family. So when it comes time for you to find a place to live, you need to find a place that will allow your pet, too. This can be easier said than done. Sometimes, it can seem like ad after ad says "no pets allowed." If you're struggling to find apartments that allow pets, the tips below may prove helpful.

Work with a real estate agent

Most people only think about hiring a real estate agent when they are buying or selling a home. However, agents can also help their clients find units for rent. Visit a local real estate office and talk to an agent about what you're looking for. They can take over your apartment search and show you only units that allow pets. This will save you from having to spend hours and hours looking through ads. There may also be some apartments that are being rented solely through real estate agents and that you would not be able to find or visit on your own.

Focus on apartment communities

Many smaller landlords that only have a couple of units have no-pet policies because they don't have the time or money to deal with the fallout if someone's pet were to damage an apartment. Larger apartment communities, on the other hand, tend to have more resources at their disposal. They have an easier time making repairs such as replacing carpet because they have a whole team of professionals working for them. As such, they are more willing to rent to people with pets. Some only rent certain units to renters with pets, while others allow pets in every unit. Visit a few apartment communities in your area and see what they have to offer.

Ask a landlord to make an exception

If living in an apartment community is not for you, then another option is to find individual apartments that you are interested in and ask the landlords to make an exception for your pet. Bring vet certificates to show that your pet is fully vaccinated. If your dog has had obedience training, bring proof of that too. Some landlords will make an exception for pet owners who prove themselves to be responsible. You may have to approach a couple before you get a yes, but it's worth the effort to find the perfect home for you and your pet.

Pet-friendly apartments are few and far between in some regions. However, if you follow the tips above, you should find a pet-friendly apartment for rent pretty soon.

Staying Somewhere You Will Love

When I started traveling a lot for work, I realized that it would probably be in my best interest to figure out what to look for in a hotel. After staying at a few bad places, I decided to make a list of amenities and comforts that I had to have. For example, I decided that I loved having an accessible gym to work on my physique while I was in town. Also, I adored having a laundry service, so that I could return home with a vat of clean laundry. After I made this list, I would compare it with the advertised features, so that I would get what I wanted. Read my blog for more traveling advice.
